While in Cape Town recently, I caught up with Gina for a quick surf and chat and I started off by asking her what it was like to be a surfer?

A surfer is someone who loves the ocean. Regardless of skill or capability. From young groms to ancient ballies, a surfer is someone who froths on the stoke of riding a wave and being in the ocean. The best surfer is always the one having the most fun.

How does your Family support your surfing?

My family is the best support system in the world. They build up my confidence and pray with me before my heats. Then they are on the beach supporting when I’m in the heat.

What was it like to win Sa jnr Champs at your home break with your family and friends present?

It was awesome. Point is somewhere I surf often with my dad and sisters, so to come out the water to my family and friends cheering on the beach felt really good.

What are you looking forward to most at Worlds?

I am really looking forward to experiencing a new culture, surfing different waves and a change in scenery. I am so excited – and admittedly nervous – to do my best in the contest.
