About

Greg Chapman

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa. I have always loved the ocean and can’t function without it. My interest in Surfing developed, when I moved close to one of South Africa’s best surf spots, Kalk Bay reef.

I mainly shoot in and around the Cape Peninsular with my favorite spots being Kalk Bay Reef and Jeffery’s Bay, up the East coast of South Africa.

I sadly have had not much chance to travel much locally or abroad, but hope to do so in the near future.

I discovered Surf Photography in 1998 by accident when a friend, who had just moved to Australia, asked me to take some photos to show his new mates in OZ.

My first attempt at shooting surfing was with an ultra-zoom point and shoot film camera.

From there I moved to my first film SLR camera, an entry level Pentax. With this particular camera I began to learn the basics of camera control and exposure and more importantly, I learnt the skill of timing, as this camera had no motor drive to speak off.

For the next few years I shot surfing on and off with a range of film cameras including the Canon EOS 300 and EOS 30.

In 2006 I started to take my surf photography more seriously and got myself a Canon EF 300mm 2.8 L IS with 2x converter. I also got the awesome Canon EOS 3 film camera. As soon as I got this setup I nailed my first double page spread in ZigZag surfing magazine (vol 30 no 4), a shot of Jordy Smith, surfing Long Beach, Cape Town , which shot on Kodak Extra color slide film. This shot is one of my all time favorites.

In 2008 I reluctantly entered the world of digital, with the Canon EOS 40D and Apple Aperture Software. Since going digital, have been regularly published in ZigZag Surfing magazine, Saltwater Girl Surf Magazine (no longer published) and local newspapers. I have also shot advertising for O’Neill South Africa and Reef Wetsuits South Africa.

I see myself Primarily as a surf photographer who is keen to try new things. I have received some photographic training from the National Collage of Photography and have a certificate in Dynamic Photography. I am not a naturally creative person but I do enjoy the challenge to make images that are not ordinary or bland.

I prefer not to be heavy handed with digital retouching but do know my way around photoshop if needed.

Outside of Photography, I have a BCOM degree with majors in Economics and Business Management.

I also have a keen interest in local and international current affairs.
